Blackheads – Treatment and Removal

Blackheads are known as open comedones. It is a common type of acne. This open comedone is a blackish plug on the skin. Blackheads are not caused by poor hygiene but by excessive oils and dead skin cells which stuck in the opening of a hair follicle. This open comedone is blackish because its outer most portion oxidizes with air and turns to black.

Blackheads are commonly found in people with oily skin. In this type of skin, oil glands are overactive and thus produce more oil than is needed. Blackheads can lead to more severe acne such as papules, pustules and cystic acne which cause permanent problems like enlarged pores and acne scars.

Blackhead Treatment

The effective blackhead treatment is to remove excessive oils and dead skin cells which can build up in your pores. The skin regimen for people with blackheads includes

– Cleanser. Wash your face with a cleanser that contains salicylic acid twice a day. Salicylic acid helps unclog pores and loosen dead skin cells.

– Moisturizer and sunscreen. Avoid a moisturizer and sunscreen that contain oils because such a moisturizer will add extra oils to the skin. Use oil-free moisturizer and sunscreen instead.

You can also apply salicylic acid, topical retinoids, Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), or Benzoyl Peroxide before putting on a moisturizer. They help remove dead skin cells from the skin and reduce the oil production.

– Exfoliation. Use an exfoliator to remove dead skin cells. If you have oily skin, you can scrub your face 3-4 times a week but if you have dry skin, you can do this just once or twice a week. Too often scrubbing can lead to skin irritation, trigger oil production, and make the problem of blackheads worse.

– Makeup. Use water-based makeup labeled as non-comedogenic. Avoid oil-based makeup which can clog your follicles. Remove makeup completely when not needed.
