STOP “Shutting Down” Your Body.

Do you know someone that is sedentary?  Someone that sits in a chair all day? 

According to the National Institute of Health, Disuse Muscle atrophy occurs from a lack of physical exercise. In most people, muscle atrophy is…

caused by not using the muscles enough. People with sedentary jobs, medical conditions that limit their movement, or decreased activity levels can lose muscle tone and develop atrophy. This type of atrophy can be reversed with vigorous exercise or better nutrition.

YOUR BODY, THE HOUSE

Your body is just like a house. Your lower body is the foundation, your upper body is the meat of the house. The more weight you put on, the more stress there will be on your knees, ankles, and feet. Imagine this: 

Try this: Pick up a 50lb dumbbell and walk around. What happens? All the stress in walking is placed onto your knees, ankles, and feet- right?  Now, imagine someone that is 30-50lbs overweight-  they walk around ALL DAY EVERYDAY with that added stress on those joints.

This person aches so badly they have to go home and sit around on the couch all day because it hurts to walk or exercise. In turn, their muscles begin to atrophy- or shut down-  and the surgeon tells them it’s time for knee, hip and ankle replacements. PLEASE:  Don’t ever stop moving. The minute you stop moving, that is when your muscles literally shut off. Once that happens, the rest of your body slowly shuts down –  making it diffiictult to walk up a simple flight of stairs.

3 Simple Tips to Avoid Muscle Atrophy:

1.  Limit tv time. Personally, I don’t have one because I would only watch it.  I’m not saying to rid your life of television, but in all honesty-  4 hrs a day is a bit too much.  Again, start moving!

2.  Park far away when you go to the mall and walk. Stop battling for the closest spot. Park far away and enjoy the walk.

3.  Stop making excuses. You aren’t too busy. Rainy and cold?  Go to to the mall and walk 5 laps. The quality of life when you are older is directly affected by the quality of life you live now.  I’m just taking a guess, but I would think you want to be the 80 year old grandfather or grandmother that goes bowling, plays tennis, and runs around with their grandchildren…. instead of being benched on the sidelines because you had too many “good” excuses in your 40’s and 50’s.
